New Orleans, Louisiana was founded in 1718 by the French Mississippi company and named after the Regent of France, Pilippe II, Duc d'Orleans, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Strategically placed at the mouth of the Mississippi River, New Orleans quickly became one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the nation. New Orleans was temporarily under Spanish rule in the 1700's before returning to French rule, and was finally sold to the United States in 1803 by Napoleon in the Louisiana Purchase.
